When do beta units become production units? The answer: all the time. Bio-Rad's software technology was making rapid advances, but the core hardware was unstable. The device is intended for laboratory use where DNA, chromosome and cellular research is conducted. Pre-prepared specimens are inserted into the slide tray on a glass slide and scanned. Altitude developed a system that allowed easy field upgrades without allowing a technician to access the chip reader's micro array scanner. Early production units were fabricated using soft tooling and prototype-style parts. The product result was longevity in the marketplace without sacrificing updated state-of-the-art technology.
