An industry first.
Altitude collaborated with Symbol Technologies to produce a breakthrough product, which combined the features of screen/pen based data input with a barcode scanner. A precursor to the PDA generation of 'Palm Pilots,' this industrial handheld terminal was the first of its kind in an industry with an insatiable need for mobility. The product had to be an ergonomic handheld solution that met the needs of workers who would operate the device for extended durations and not experience significant fatigue to the arms and hands. We performed studies on an international group of early adopters using dozens of quick prototypes, to develop an ergonomic grip with two switches and an articulating wrist strap. This allows the wrist to remain comfortably oriented while performing hundreds of data entry operations each day in either a right or left handed orientation for up to 8-10 hours. The development of a docking station extended the capability of the device into a desktop platform for data management and inventory tracking.
