For use in environments where accurate data capture is key, productivity essential and durability paramount, Symbol Technologies turned to Altitude to design their next generation laser barcode scanner - the LS4000i. To understand the ergonomic needs of users in retail, warehouse, manufacturing and healthcare environments we used a combination of qualitative methods and extensive user testing with prototypes to determine key metrics that would ensure heightened comfort and productivity. Ethnographies showed that the scanner had to be lightweight, optimized to fit comfortably into hands of all sizes with an easily actuated trigger. We combined an ergonomically correct form factor with an innovative two-finger trigger to increase flexibility and comfort. This appropriately appointed detail became a signature for all Symbol handheld scanners and provided the company with a competitive patent extension. Integrated elastomeric features at key areas on the product provide protection against unexpected impacts drastically reducing equipment and maintenance costs. Symbol customers use this device to dramatically increase throughput in scan-intensive environments.
