Warmly Received.
With the Hotshot XL, Altitude evolved a thermal imaging camera from a bulky, difficult piece of equipment to an adaptable, intuitive, easy-to-use tool that has improved the efficiency of its users by as much as 50 percent.
Finding Heat Without Breaking Necks
Thermal imaging devices, which identify heat emissions, are an important tool for keeping homes and buildings maintained. Home inspectors and electricians use them to detect missing insulation and overheating industrial equipment. However, previous detection devices of this type were heavy, ultra sensitive, and complicated. They could not record information, forcing users to jot down notes that had to be transcribed later.
Electrophysics hired Altitude to design a device that was lightweight, durable, and intuitive, and that could facilitate data collection and entry. We began by conducting research, observing the use of existing thermal imaging devices and interviewing users about their needs and wishes. This work yielded valuable insights and drove our design conceptualization.
Delivering Value: The Best Tool for the Job
During our research phase, we noticed that users had trouble getting existing devices in the right position to record the information they needed. Often they had to climb up ladders, crawl into confined spaces, or get down on floor level to reach their target. Our version of the thermal imaging camera made this “hands-on” work much more manageable…and safe. First, we developed an ergonomic housing with a rotating infraread “eyeball” so users could take readings from a variety of positions while still looking at the viewing screen. Second, we designed the device to be operable with only one hand. Users simply manipulate a joystick and trigger with their thumb. An integrated hand strap minimizes grip force, and reduces accidental drops. Finally, the new device is rugged yet light–the lightest on the market, in fact.
Usability and comfort has been optimized, and risk minimized. As a result, the Hotshot XL has greatly increased productivity for its user market, and its rugged design also translates into lower operating costs.
