The road less traveled.
Developed for Bayer HealthCare's diagnostics division, the 800 series blood gas analyzer provides time-sensitive testing for critically ill patients. It tests in a variety of areas including pH, blood gases, electrolytes, CO-oximetry, lactate and glucose - all from a single sample. We conducted rigorous observational research worldwide with incumbent products to understand the habits and practices of technicians, and identify their unmet needs. Without first securing and properly synthesizing research data from customers all over the world, the development team would have mistakenly pursued many dead-end paths to design optimization. One insight that critically informed the analyzers development was the observed behavior that small 'foot print' analyzers were too tall for most laboratory shelves, especially in Asia. This made the display only accessible to technicians 5'9" or taller, and access to reagent bottles practically impossible. Small footprint, an industry precedent in the design of bench top analyzers, was not applicable in this instance. We recommended a low profile configuration for the new unit. By avoiding these common mistakes, we were able to develop a truly international system that stood strong as the industry standard and the sales volume leader for over 2 decades.
